nurses in icuProject activities during the intervention phase will focus on implementation of clinical practices known to be effective in the prevention, detection and management of neonatal infection (such as hand hygiene, venous catheter care, provision of breast milk, and kangaroo mother care).

Components and examples of this intervention will include:

  1. Educational programs to up-skill staff in evidence-based best practice. The programs will provide for neonatal nurses and doctors from the South East Asian centres to be trained in 'SCORPIO', a small-group, skills-based, interactive teaching method, and utilise a train-the-trainer approach. The educational activities will also include accessing, appraising and using research evidence, and psychological approaches to implementation of practice change.
  2. Implementation tools to support evidence-based changes to practice.
  3. Ongoing audit and feedback of neonatal infection and mortality data.
